Lake Superior Freethinkers is a friendship group in support of:
» Morality without Superstition
» Church & State Separation
» Freedom from Religions
» and Rational Thought
The group was formed in 1997 by Dr. Bill van Druten and others who hoped to prevent the sale of Duluth’s last hospital facility to the Roman Catholic Church. This would have limited medical choices for all women in the Duluth and surrounding areas. When this merger was blocked, the group worked with the ACLU to remove a Ten Commandments monument to a place of honor that was not on City Hall property.
Once that was achieved, the group went on to protest of a gay ban in the Boy Scouts and block Evangelical recruiters from using public school facilities. As a chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, the group continues to serve as a watchdog to defend the separation of church and state.
On May 24, 2016, Lake Superior Freethinkers became a registered Minnesota corporation recognized as a nonprofit organization by the IRS under Section 501(c)(3). Tax receipts are available for donations of $75 or more.
